The course establishes a team-based learning approach through small-group work and communication skills are developed from the very beginning due to the importance of this skill in becoming a compassionate doctor. The course is divided into three phases.
Phase 1 (first and second year) involves learning the fundamental biomedical science underlying medical practice through a systems-based approach. Basic clinical skills are also developed and students explore ethics, professionalism and law early on.Students can also undertake special study topics which can include an opportunity to take part in a research project or explore a field of interest within medicine more.
In Phase 2 (third and fourth year), clinical education expands through numerous clinical placements across different primary and secondary care settings. In the third year in particular, students explore different medical and surgical specialties. In the fourth year, students are taught holistic patient management and enhance their clinical experience and understanding.
Phase 3 (final year) focuses on preparing for the foundation programme and becoming a junior doctor through apprenticeships as well as elective period to explore medicine in different settings.
