Study Medicine at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS)

Medicine at BSMS is a five-year course that aims to educate students into intelligent, well-equipped doctors who will go on to deliver high-standard care to future patients in a professional and compassionate manner. The medical school offers advance facilities for teaching anatomy, modern clinical skills labs and simulation rooms to provide a high quality education from the very beginning.

The first two years involve a systems-based approach to learning where each module integrates an understand of each system in health and illness and delves into aspects of both biomedical science and psychosocial science. Anatomy teaching is delivered through cadaveric dissections, prosections, clinical imaging, etc. Students also learn basic clinical skills in patient examination and history-taking as well as communication and diagnostic reasoning through classroomlearning and placements in a range of healthcare settings.

In the third year, clinical attachments take place across different specialties in the medical and surgical field and involves teaching in social science, public health and ethics. In the fourth year, you explore further specialised areas in clinical medicine with a focus on integrated patient care in different healthcare settings. Students also take part in Time for Autism and undertake an research project throughout the year.

The final year focuses on further increasing clinical experience in medical students and preparation for the Foundation programme. Teaching will involve collaborating within a clinical team to work on a wide range of cases. Throughout this year, skillsin patient investigation, diagnosis and treatment are further developed in different areas of medicine.BSMS also offer an optional year to undertake an intercalated degree between the third and fourth year to allow students the chance to study further into a field of interest to them but this offer is limited to 40% of their medical students.
