Dundee offer a five-year medical programme that follows a spiral curriculum in which each year revisits and builds upon the knowledge learnt in the previous years to gradually consolidate and expand level of understanding. Teaching involves a combination of traditional lectures, problem-based learning, case-based learning and small-group work/teaching.
Learning in the first three years takes place through a system-based approach that looks into the body in both health and disease states. The basics of medical science are taught with a focus on bringing clinical contexts into the learning process and developing clinical thinking abilities early on in medical students.Students also get the chance to learn essential anatomy knowledge though cadaveric dissection which offers a unique understanding like no other.
After the first three pre-clinical years, student can intercalate in a field of interest and obtain a BMSc degree. During fourth and fifth year, focus is massively shifted to clinical education and training across the medical specialties primarily through placements in hospitals, GPs and other healthcare settings. Clinical educations involves ward-based learning, simulation-based learning as well as the Dundee Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship.
‘My name is Soumya Tangirala and I am a 2nd year medical student at the University of Dundee. I have come to where I am after taking a gap year, working in the healthcare system. I’m originally born in India, but been brought up in Scotland. I am trilingual in Hindi, Telugu and English, which I feel privileged about. I am happy to help with interview preparation and any questions regarding application process.’
